The state government hopes to complete work on 7,110 km of rural roads selected for reconstruction under the Pragati Patha scheme in the next one-and-a-half years, despite several objections raised by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), which is financing the project.
Responding to KM Shivalinge Gowda (Congress), Panchayat Raj Minister Priyank Kharge informed the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday that under the Pragati Patha programme, the government is planning to reconstruct 7,110 km of rural roads at a cost of ₹ 5,180 crore. Of this, ADB is lending ₹3,242 crore.
A total of 1,353 roads were selected in terms of constituencies. Of these, ADB has raised objections against 293 roads. These roads are located in Bengaluru Rural, Chamarajanagar, Chikkamagaluru, South Kannada, Kodagu, Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts. Kharge said.

Detailed project reports (DPR) have been prepared for 999 roads and 573 are ready for tender. Bids will be floated in the next one-and-a-half months, he said.
The ADB has objected to roads that pass through reserve forest areas, human-animal conflict-prone regions, migratory bird habitats and other ecologically sensitive zones, he added.
Mr. Kharge said the ADB team was informed that the roads proposed for the development were not new but had existed for almost 50 years and were already passable.
