In a major step towards strengthening Kerala’s energy infrastructure, the state’s first Large Scale Energy Storage System (BESS) will be set up at Mylatti in Kasaragod.
Electricity Minister K. Krishnankutty will inaugurate the construction of the project on Saturday (February 28).
The project, one of the largest battery storage systems in India and the first of its kind in the state, is expected to serve as a major milestone for the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) in addressing new energy challenges and enhancing grid stability.
The advanced storage facility, with a capacity of approximately 125 MW, will be able to process up to 5 million units of electricity per day. Its primary goal is to store excess electricity generated from solar power plants during the day and feed it back into the grid during evening peak times when demand is highest. The project is being implemented with the support of Viability Gap Funding from the Union Government.
The power plant is being built by JSW Neo Energy on the premises of the 220 kV substation in Mylatti. As per the agreement, the board has decided to offer an incentive of over ₹8 crore if the company completes the construction within the stipulated time frame.
Once fully operational, the facility is expected to reduce KSEB’s dependence on purchasing high-cost electricity from external sources during night hours, thereby improving cost efficiency and reliability of supply.
The initiative is also part of a larger plan to turn Kasaragod into a solar power hub. Apart from Mylatti, the electricity department has initiated steps to set up smaller battery storage units at Sreekandapuram, Pothencode and Areekode. The authorities aim to launch the Mylatti project on a commercial basis by October.
