Tamil Nadu Cauvery Farmers Association president PR Pandian on Sunday launched a statewide campaign rally from Poompuhar to create awareness among people, political parties and other stakeholders about the dangers of Karnataka’s move to build a buffer tank across the Cauvery at Mekedat.

AM Vikram Raja, president of the Federation of Tamil Nadu Traders Associations called off the demonstrations. Mr Pandian said coordinated action was needed to stop the proposal. It should never be allowed to proceed. It was against the interest of the lower littoral states. If allowed, it would pose a great danger to the livelihood of thousands of Tamil Nadu farmers. People and political parties, irrespective of their political affiliation, should stand united and oppose this move. According to him, Rasimanal was a suitable place for the construction of the dam.

Leaders of various farmer associations P. Ayyakkannu, Kattikulam Manickavasagam, L. Adhimoolam, Vettangudi Srinivasan and Kollidam Viswanathan were present.

The rally will end at Tiruvarur on September 24. Mr Pandian will visit Thanjavur, Tiruchi, Karur, Namakkal, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Vellore, Kancheepuram, Chennai, Puducherry and Cuddalore.
