Initial findings of the deadly blast, which occurred near Red Fort, suggested that the car blast was not a typical suicide blast, but was instead triggered by a panicked suspect.
Security agencies are conducting raids at multiple locations linked to terror networks and have seized a large quantity of explosives in Faridabad, Saharanpur, Pulwama and other areas. Investigators believe the suspect acted rashly under increasing pressure.
Sources told ANI that the suspect did not follow the usual pattern of a suicide car bombing – he did not ram his car into the target or crash on purpose. The explosion near the Red Fort did not follow the typical modus operandi of suicide bombers aiming to cause maximum damage.
The publication also said that the bomb that was used in the explosion was premature and not fully developed to cause maximum damage. This is why the explosion did not create a crater and no shrapnel or projectiles were found at the explosion site.
Additionally, the vehicle was still in motion at the time of the explosion and the IED was not equipped enough to cause heavy casualties.
Sources also revealed that coordinated sweeps and pan-India vigilance managed to avert an attack that could have been more deadly.
The Union home minister chaired a meeting with senior officials on Tuesday, after which he said the perpetrators of this attack “will face the full wrath of our agencies”.
He directed the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to submit a report at the earliest and also asked the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) to collate the samples obtained from the blast site and submit a comprehensive report at the earliest.
This is a developing story. Check back later for more updates.
