The New Zealand cricket veteran joined Indian Premier League’s Lucknow Super Giants ahead of the mini-auction. However, Williamson, who has over 2,000 runs in the competition, has joined the team as the team’s strategic advisor.
The World Test Championship winner, who also played in the ODI and T20 World Cup finals in 2019 and 2022, is yet to officially retire, but the new appointment is likely to mark the end of his cricket career in the cash-rich league.
Williamson played a total of 79 matches in the Indian Premier League, most of which came for SunRisers Hyderabad. Affectionately called ‘Kane Mama’, Williamson led the franchise to the finals of the tournament in 2018 where he top scored for the franchise with 735 runs.
LSG owner Sanjeev Goenka took to the X to announce the association and welcome Williamson to the team. The New Zealand star replaces former Indian cricketer Zaheer Khan in the franchise.
“Kane has been part of the Super Giants family and it is an absolute pleasure to welcome him in his new role as Strategic Advisor to LSG. His leadership, strategic insight, deep understanding of the game and ability to inspire players make him an invaluable addition to the team,” said Sanjeev Goenka.
Zaheer Khan leaves LSG
Kane Williamson’s entry into the franchise basically marks the end of the journey for former Indian pacer Zaheer Khan, who joined the franchise just a year ago. Although it is not official, it seems that Zaheer has vacated his role in the team.
Zaheer joined the team in 2024 after Gautam Gambhir left the franchise for Kolkata Knight Riders. Zaheer was tasked with reviving India’s bowling line-up at LSG, a dream that remained unfulfilled.
