Deputy Chief Minister and Chief Jan Sen (JSP) Pawan Kalyan said India meant the 50th anniversary of the emergency state 25 June 1975 – the period widely considered one of the darkest chapters in the country’s democratic history. Throughout the country, political leaders, civil society groups and citizens watched “Samvidhaan Hytya Diwas” to remember the suspension of constitutional rights and pay tribute to those who resisted authoritarian intervention.
In the paper on Wednesday, Mr. Pawan Kalyan said he said that the emergency situation was not only a political event, but a direct betrayal of the Indian constitution, several leaders remembered how civil freedoms were trampled, the press was confused and the basic rights were suspended in the then congress regime led by Gandhi.
Prominent opposition leaders of that time – including Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, LK Advani, George Fernandes and Morarji Desai – were imprisoned for expressing disagreements and defense of democracy.
When we refer to 50 years of this constitutional betrayal, we observe “Samvidhaan Hytya Diwas” to remember the victims of those who stood fearlessly against the dictatorship and confirm the dignity of our democracy.
“Let us remember the victims of the leader who opposed oppression, as well as the anxiety of millions whose voices have been silenced. Even today we must protect against any attempt to threaten our constitution in the name of politics,” he added.
