An earthmoving machine driver was killed after part of a hill collapsed near Varkala.
Incident society at Cherurniyoryor in Varkala around 12 noon, the deceased was identified as Anesh (38) of Nedumankav in Collam.
According to the police, a large mass of earth slid from the top of the hill and fell on the earthmoving machine while the excavation work was going on. The accident partially crushed the vehicle and trapped the operator inside.
Local residents and people from the nearby area gathered at the site and started rescue operations. Soon, two units of Kerala Fire Rescue Services arrived from Varkala and managed to free Aneesh from the wreckage. He was immediately rushed to Varkala taluk hospitals, but doctors declared him brought dead on arrival.
