The devotees on Thursday put the temple of Sreecrishn, Guruvayur, to witness the annual Illam Nira ritual, which took place as a sign of gratitude for agricultural prosperity.
As in previous years, the ritual represented “Kathir Puja” near the pole of the temple flag, next to “Valiya Balikkal”. The harvested Sheaves (“Kathir Kathtas”) was taken as “Prasadam”.
The ritual took place between 11:00 and 1.40 pm Sheaves brought traditional holders, the Azhikal and Manayam families, along with the offer of devotees, transferred the temple priests to the mast. After Lakshmi Puja, the pulleys were offered to Guruvayuppan and later divided among the devotees.
The “Illam Nira” celebrations will be followed by the “Thriputhari” festival on September 2. On that day, the new rice will be offered to the deity in the form of “Payasam” and “Appam”.
