The Delhi High Court has ordered the Center to reconsider the ₹50 crore ceiling set for the treatment of rare disease patients under the National Rare Disease Policy, saying the “cap is inadequate” for some category 3 rare diseases.
Rare diseases were identified and divided into three groups: Group 1: Disorders amenable to one-time curative treatment. Group 2: Diseases requiring long-term/lifelong treatment with relatively lower treatment costs. Group 3: Diseases for which definitive treatment is available but very expensive and life-long therapy.
