The long delay in setting up a permanent campus for Government Medical College Maheshwaram has become a source of discontent among first and second year MBBS students who staged a peaceful protest on the college premises on Monday.
The students said there has been no visible progress or clear timetable for shifting from the temporary placement to Bharat Institute of Engineering and Technology (BEIT), even though more than a year has passed since admissions began. They said repeated submissions to the principal’s office, the director of medical education (DME) and the district collector did not yield any response.
The students recalled that during admission they were told that the Telangana Institute of Medical Sciences (TIMS) in Kothapet would be allotted to GMC Maheshwaram and that the shift from the temporary premises would take place within a few months. They said no official confirmation or update has been provided since then.
Several other outstanding issues were mentioned in the circular shared among the students. These included the absence of a dedicated transport facility for daily clinical postings, forcing students to either depend on RTC buses or arrange for private transport. The lack of official hostel accommodation for both male and female students was described as a major problem, with many having to cope with high rents, limited food options and unsafe living conditions.
Students also pointed out the lack of infrastructure in the temporary campus. They said academic facilities are inadequate, laboratories remain incomplete and classrooms are inadequate. They raised concerns over the absence of a playground or recreational space, security lapses involving female students and restrictions imposed by the BIET management at the campus gates, all of which they described as long-standing grievances awaiting redressal.
