On Friday, the General Secretary of the District Congress of the IDUKKI Benny Peruvanthanam resigned to the Congress to protest the attitude of the party to the WAQF Act (amendment).
Mr. Peruvanthanam offered his resignation accusing the party that he neglects a Christian minority and took a pro-Muslim attitude to Munambam.
He argued that the Congress Committee for all India and the management of KPCC was not subject to applications of the Christian community to support the bill.
“Congress has neglected the community of Christian minority for years, while only the satisfaction of Muslims. I resign to the congress side to protest this approach,” he told reporters.
He stated that he raised this problem on party forums and urged changes, but no measures were taken.
“The situation has reached a point where it is impossible to move forward, so I resigned from the post of Minister DCC and also from the party,” he added.
He said that the Indian Catholic Bishops’ Conference and Catholic Conference of Catholic Bishops urged the Congress of Kerala to support the bill. However, the leadership opposed it and voted for the Muslim community.
However, he stated that he was now not comparing with any other political party. Congress management must still comment on this matter.
Mr. Peruvanthanam said that more leaders of the congress from the Christian community will soon leave the party.
