Elections to 14 urban local bodies (ULBs), including three Nagar panchayats, witnessed a commendable voter turnout across the Godavari region on Sunday despite being busy recovering from the devastation caused by ‘Cyclone Arnab’.

Among all ULBs, Narsapuram and Amalapuram municipalities were among the worst hit by the cyclone, but voters thronged the polling booths to exercise their franchise. Simultaneously, ‘Cyclone Arnab’ rescue operations continued in the two towns of Narsapuram and Amalapuram.

At least 71.87% voters cast their vote in Amalapuram municipality. In Narsapuram village, the area where the cyclone hit on October 29, 70% of voters cast their vote.

In the district Dr. BR Ambedkar Konaseema Ramachandrapuram municipality recorded a voter turnout of 70.73% while Mummudivaram nagar panchayat recorded 75.09%.

Pawan’s Own Land: In Kakinada district, the total voting percentage was 68.42. In the Pithapuram constituency, represented by Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan, Pithapuram and Gollaprolu municipalities witnessed voting percentages of 66.31 and 74.36 respectively. In the hilly areas of Kakinada district, Peddapuram recorded 66.86% polling while Samarlakota and Tuni recorded 70.57% and 65.24% respectively.

In Yeleswaram nagar panchayat, which recorded a voter turnout of 71.40%, voting was stopped for some time due to technical glitches. Voters pointed out the absence of the BJP candidate’s name and symbol on the ballot papers cast in one polling station.

In another polling station, the name and symbol of the TDP candidate were said to be missing from the ballot papers. Polling resumed after District Collector MN Harendhira Prasad rushed to the venues and resolved the issue. The problem arose during the distribution of ballots on October 31.

Elections in East Godavari district were largely peaceful. Among the three municipalities that participated in the elections, Mandapeta witnessed the highest voting percentage of 77.54. Represented by Tourism Minister Kandula Durgesh, Nidadavolu Municipality witnessed 69.30% while Kovvuru 68.43%.
