The US military action against Venezuela drew a sharp reaction from Communist leaders in Kerala including Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) General Secretary MA Baba. Condemning the attack, Mr. Baby said the US attack on Venezuela is a blatant imperialist invasion of a country that has resisted imperialist plans and US domination over the years.
At a press conference here on Saturday, he said that the US is behaving like a rogue state and the main objective of the latest attack is to subject the country to American dictatorship. Today’s attack on Venezuela may be repeated tomorrow against other countries. The US attack on Venezuela is also a blatant violation of international law, Mr. Baby said, calling for strong public protests against such incidents.
The bombing of Venezuela is also an act of international terrorism by US-led imperialism. Trump’s (US President Donald Trump) claim of kidnapping President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, if true, is yet another flagrant violation of international law. This exposes the fallacy of the US claim that Trump is a “president of peace” and exposes the ugly face of US militaristic aggression to the world, he said in a post on social media.
‘in solidarity’
“We stand in solidarity with Venezuela. The CPI(M) calls on its members to hold protests whenever possible. The international community should put pressure on the US to stop its blatant aggression against Venezuela, and the UN Security Council should condemn this aggression,” he said.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan strongly condemned the aggression, saying the attack exposed a vicious operation by a rogue state that is stoking undisguised enmity in the Global South for implementing its devious plans. “It is also an act of terrorism that poses a threat to peace in Latin America, a continent with a legacy of such onslaught and anti-imperialist struggles. Everyone should rise in unity to challenge this brazen attack on Venezuela and resist imperialist moves against global peace,” he said in a post on social media.
CPI(M) state secretary MV Govindan claimed that the attack was aimed at asserting control over the country’s vast oil reserves and said the invasion of the country’s sovereignty by bombing and imprisoning the president was to protect corporate interests. “We appeal to all party units and democratic believers to organize strong protests across the country against this,” he said.
