The CPI(M) claims that poverty-stricken people are leaving Tripura to earn a living
The CPI(M) claims that nearly two million men, mostly youths, have left Tripura for various states to earn a living for their families. The party said the BJP’s tall claims of development and empowerment are falling flat as the situation on the ground is bleak.
Tripura State Secretary and Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chowdhury made the allegation at a press conference after the two-day key meeting of the CPI(M) concluded on Friday. CPI(M) General Secretary MA Baby, Politburo members Mohammad Salim and former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar attended the meeting.
Mr Chowdhury said party delegates from Kanchanpur, Longtharai Valley and Ganda Twisa sub-division detailed the exodus of people suffering from extreme poverty and lack of work. He said male family members from the interior areas of these sub-divisions had gone to Mizoram and Assam in search of work.
He claimed that nearly two million people left the state under compulsion because there was no way to earn a living in the state. He claimed that jobs under VB–G RAM G, the new version of MGNREGA, are conspicuously absent, though some are distributed on the basis of affiliation with the ruling party.
Mr. Chowdhury said the State Committee meeting also reviewed the policies of the Central and State Governments which affected both organized and unorganized workers in the country to a large extent. He said the party would conduct a series of protest programs in the state from the first week of July to focus on the financial constraints and labor crisis of the people in the state.
The CPI(M) state secretary said the Special Intensive Review or SIR, the process of which is underway in Tripura, was extensively discussed in the meeting. He said the electoral roll revision cannot be prevented but the Left party will ensure that people are not harassed and discriminated against through the exercise.
He said he was only presenting a brief overview of the extraordinary state committee’s proceedings, which reportedly focused on a wide range of topics, including the party’s performance in recent elections.
