On Tuesday (July 15, 2025), the Delhi Court sought the response of the Prison Authorities in Tihar and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to a request submitted by a terrorist attack in Mumbai 26/11 accused Tahawur Rana, who turned to a court looking for permission to talk to his family.
Special judge Nia Chander Jit Singh also allowed Mr. Rana’s independent action to seek instructions to provide a bed in prison.
Unlike the application, Tihar quoted a prison manual that allows beds only for prisoners at the age of 65 and over. Mr. Rana has not yet reached the age of 65.
However, Mr. Rany advisor, advocate Piyush Sachdev, said the accused was 64 years and six months old and suffered from health conditions that require special consideration.
NIA reported the court that it had submitted the prison authorities a complete history of Mr. Rany.
The matter was published for another hearing of 25 July.
Mr. Rana, 64 years old from the United States, is facing a court in connection with terrorist attacks in Mumbai in 2008, which left more than 166 people dead.
The Nia, who investigates the case, accused Mr. Rany of conspiracy during the attacks along with his collaborator David Headley. Headley, Operation Lashkar-E-Taiba (years), is charged with performing planning and survey of attacks on the command of Chief Hafiz Saeed.
