The contribution to the country and society by advocates before and even after independence has been remarkable and now they can play a decisive role in public administration through their legal acquaintances, Upalokayukta KN Phaneendra said.

He was addressing a conference on ‘Role of Judicial Officers and Advocates in Public Administration’ held at the District Court here on Saturday. Lawyers have always remained prominent in society and led public administration. After independence, many advocates like Dr. BR Ambedkar, Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel contributed to shaping the society.

“The present advocates also help the public whenever they face problems in getting benefits due to mismanagement by civil servants,” he said.

“Every citizen of the country is entitled to receive government benefits till death. The government is extending the benefits. But it is important to note that how many of them reach the last person in the society. Therefore, judicial officers and lawyers must ensure that the benefits reach everyone,” Phaneendra said.

Advocates are lenient in a law that is enacted for the public good. If the managers don’t get them to the threshold, the advocates should step in and through the judiciary take those benefits away from the needy. Without the help of lawyers, the judiciary cannot function alone in the performance of public administration.

Upalokayukta distributed equipment to the visually impaired and physically challenged under the Department of Empowerment of the Differently Handicapped and Senior Citizens.

District and Sessions Judge HJ Maruladisiddaradhya expressed happiness over the distribution of equipment to the differently-abled. Senior Civil Judge Balasaheb Wadavade; Civil Judge and Member-Secretary, Mariyappa District Legal Services Authority; District Bar Association Chairman RSPatil and others were present.
