The construction work of the Vattiyurkavu Junction Development Project in Kerala will begin on September 14

Construction work on the Vattiyurkavu Junction Development Project in Thiruvananthapuram will begin on Monday (September 14, 2026).

Health Minister and Vattiyurkavu MLA K. Muraleedharan will inaugurate the work near Maruthankuzha. The works contracted by the Kerala Road Fund Board with the Uralungal Labor Contract Cooperative Society (ULCCS) include construction of roads, culverts and retaining walls as well as shifting of utilities.

The project, which has been a long-standing demand of the people of Vattiyurkav and the surrounding regions, began a few years ago with the acquisition of land by traders and other land owners in the area.

Revised estimate

The project initially started with an estimate of ₹506.48 crore, which was later revised to ₹531.76 crore. A large part of this amount – ₹ 458.94 crore – was earmarked for land purchase. Work is currently underway on the shopping complex to rehabilitate more than 500 traders who have given up their shops and land for the project.

The project involves the construction of a 10.8 kilometer stretch from Sasthamangalam-Vattiyurkavu-Mannarakkonam-Peroorkada and from there to Mukkola and Vazhayila. The communication will be built with a width of 18.5 meters. The demolition of most of the buildings on the acquired land has already been completed.

With ₹385 million in land acquisition and rehabilitation funding from the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) in the first phase, landowners were given substantial compensation of up to ₹40 lakh for every cent.

During the recent parliamentary elections, the project became a point of debate between the then ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the United Democratic Front (UDF). The LDF and former Vattiyurkavu MLA VK Prasanth claimed credit for carrying out land acquisition for the project, which had been on hold for several years. However, both the UDF and Mr Muraleedharan have pointed out the delay over the last decade.
