An official of the Karnataka Silk Industries Corporation (KSIC) has filed a complaint against the alleged misuse of the organization’s name and logo through fake Instagram accounts allegedly created to cheat customers online.
Acting on a complaint filed by Doddappa Sutagatti, marketing assistant of the corporation, the central cyber police division registered an FIR under Section 66(c) (identity theft) of the IT Act.
According to the complaint, unidentified persons have created several fake Instagram accounts in the name of ‘KSIC Mysore silk’ in the last six months without any permission. These accounts allegedly uploaded copied images of products sold at KSIC outlets and falsely presented them as the organization’s official online sales platform.
KSIC officials said the accused misused the organization’s name and logo to attract customers and collect money through online transactions, thereby defrauding the public. According to them, fraudulent activity not only posed a risk of financial loss for customers, but also damaged the reputation and credibility of the state cooperative.
Officials clarified that KSIC has not authorized any Instagram page or online platform to sell products in this manner and asked for strict legal action against those involved in creating and operating fake social media accounts.
Further investigation is underway.
