Cuddalore Collector Sibi Adhithya Senthil Kumar on Monday inspected the flood alleviation works being carried out by the Water Resources Department (WRD) along Thenpennai and Gedilam rivers in Cuddalore and Panruti taluks.
He ordered officials to ensure quality and speed up the work.
According to a press release, the Collector inspected the bank strengthening work of Thenpennai river to protect low-lying areas including Manjakuppam, Gundu Uppalavadi, Kandakadu, Periyakanganakuppam, Utchimedu, Nanamedu and Uppalavadi. The work is being carried out at a cost of ₹57 crore.
Once completed, the work is expected to protect six villages and 27 Cuddalore Corporation guards, agricultural land and houses.
The Collector also inspected the construction of a 323-metre flood wall along the right bank of the Thenpennai river between Kumarappan Nagar and the Collectorate. He also inspected the desilting works in Walajah canal at Karumbur and Vellapakkam main canal at Nellikuppam.
Mr. Kumar also inspected the construction of a check dam across the Thenpennai river at Melpattambakkam in Panruti taluk. Constructed at a cost of ₹63 crore, the check dam is expected to recharge groundwater, bring 131 borewells in eight villages and boost irrigation to 2,410.12 hectares.
The Collector also inspected the construction of flood walls and the strengthening of the Gedilam River dikes. The completion work would benefit 9,537 residents, reduce flood damage, protect farmland and conserve stormwater that would otherwise flow into the sea, the company said.
