The Center has released ₹1,034 crore to gram panchayats in Telangana under the 15th Finance Commission grants to strengthen local governance and provide basic public services in 12,702 villages, Union Coal and Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy said on Thursday.
The Modi government here has released more than ₹11,000 crore to rural local bodies in the last 12 years. Between 2015-16 and 2019-20, Telangana received ₹5,060 crore and the allocation for 2020-21 to 2025-26 has increased significantly to ₹9,050 crore, of which ₹6,051 crore has already been disbursed, he said.
The Center released ₹259.36 crore in the first installment on February 5, followed by ₹387.1 crore in the second installment and ₹387.96 crore was released recently as the third installment after the completion of gram panchayat elections. Another ₹ 2,000 crore will be released after submission of the ‘Certificate of Utilization’ by the state.
The state government, as empowered under the finance commission guidelines, has to transfer the funds to the gram panchayats within 10 working days without any deductions. Any delay requires payment of interest at the prevailing government market lending rate, the minister said.
He urged the Telangana government to expeditiously transfer the remaining funds to the newly elected grampanchayats to ensure continuous rural development and strengthen basic democratic institutions, a press release said.
