New Delhi: Department for promotion of industry and internal trade (DPIIT) has released the timelines for implementing the quality control command (QCO) on households, commercial and similar electrical equipment.
The decision comes in the middle of the ongoing India business negotiations with the main partners, including the US and the European Union (EU) and the completion of a business agreement with the UK – sources of premium electric goods and household appliances.
Mint first informed on 13 December 2024 about the government plan to release QCO standards for MSME and expand deadlines.
The deadline for compliance with the regulations was shifted to 19 March 2026 for large and medium domestic companies and foreign manufacturers, the Ministry of Trade said on Tuesday.
The original order was supposed to enter into force at the end of this year, but the government adapted to concerns about industry on implementation obstacles and shares inheritance.
The aim of this step is also to avoid disruption of imports from countries with which India seeks to expand trade, especially in technologically heavy industries.
Electrical appliances imported from the EU, Great Britain and the US – such as intelligent kitchen aids, air purifiers, washing machines and diagnostic tools – have seen consistent demand in India, especially on urban and premium consumer markets.
Brands from Germany, Italy and the US are particularly popular in the segment of home facilities.

Experts in the field see the relaxation of QCO as a practical step that avoids disturbance of supplies at a time when negotiations on larger market approaches and tariffs are proceeding.
According to DPIIT, QCO applies to all electrical appliances with a nominal voltage not exceeding 250 V for single -phase and 480 V for other types, including battery -controlled products. According to the government announcement, however, items that have already been exempt from its existing BIS certificate from its extent.
For the support of smaller players, microys have received another six months, while small businesses have received a three -month extension, she said. The order also exempts imports for research and development purposes (R&D) (up to 200 units) and enables the check -in of older shares produced or imported before the recovery date.
According to a higher government official, a wider intention remains to strengthen the ecosystem of domestic quality and promote consumer safety without suppression of innovation or disruption of trade. “This is in line with the vision of the Prime Minister to become India to become a global production center under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative,” the higher official said.
“We welcome the government’s decision. The widespread timeline and relaxation will benefit from MSMes by giving them time and flexibility to comply with new quality standards without disturbing operations,” said Vinod Kumar, President of India Smeum.
The Indian electronic goods market takes considerable growth, while the electronics sector will achieve by 2025-26 $ 300 billion by 2025-26 $ 300 billion, controlled by government initiatives and increasing consumer demand. This growth is expected to create 12 million jobs according to India Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF), the Ministry of Commerce.
