What is the caste census?
Census It means collecting data -based data during the census. Data provide details of caste distribution, their socio-economic conditions, educational status and other related factors.
The idea of census is to include questions about caste during the normal exercise of the census.
The list of caste was a regular feature of the census during the British government from 1881 to 1931. However, with the first census of independent India in 1951, the government ended this practice.
After India has reached independence, the government classified citizens into four wide groups on the basis of social and educational criteria: planned tribes (ST), planned caste (SC), other reverse classes (OVC) and general category.
However, the data collected during the census since 1951 in India included the number of individuals belonging to SC and STS, except for religious designations such as Hinda and Muslims.

Members of caste groups other than SCS and STS were not counted. In 1961, however, the Union’s government allowed states to conduct its own surveys and to form a specific lists of citizens of the Civil Code if they want it.
The latest caste data comes from the 1931 census, which was taken from independence. The 1941 census, which was adopted during World War II, also collected caste data, but has never been published.
Before the decision of the 30th April, BJP was considered as an aversion to the caste census. In fact, many parties’ leaders often focused on Congress and accused it of using caste to divide society.
On July 20, 2021 Foreign Minister (internal matters), Nityanand Rai, he told Parliament that the government Modi decided to be a policy to not quantify a caste other than SCS and STS in the census.
