The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested two people in connection with a human trafficking ring that lured Indian nationals to fraudulent compounds operating in Southeast Asian countries, including Myanmar and Cambodia, on the pretext of lucrative job opportunities.
The accused have been identified as Nipender Chaudhary and Nilesh Narpatsinh Purohit. The agency said both were involved in people smuggling.
The CBI alleged that Nipender arranged logistics for Indian nationals to be taken to Myanmar via Thailand. “The victims were transported from Bangkok to Mae Sot before being illegally transferred across the Thai-Myanmar border to fraud complexes operating in Myanmar,” the agency said.
The second accused allegedly played a “central role” in managing a network of sub-agents across India on behalf of the scam complex operators. He operated from an office in a fraudulent complex near the Thai-Myanmar border and accepted cryptocurrency payments from operators of illegal facilities.
The CBI said the fraudulent compounds are run by multinational cyber crime syndicates and serve as hubs for large-scale financial cyber fraud targeting victims in multiple countries. “Indian nationals trafficked to these facilities were allegedly forced to participate in illegal cyber-criminal activities. Their freedom of movement was restricted, passports were confiscated and several victims allegedly faced physical and psychological abuse. In many cases, families were forced to pay substantial sums of money to secure the release of their relatives,” it said.
Earlier, in May 2026, the CBI had conducted searches at eight locations in four states in connection with the same case and arrested another accused involved in a human trafficking ring.
