For a few seconds after the final New Zealand wicket fell in Ahmedabad on Sunday, Suryakumar Yadav looked lost. The tears never came. Instead, there was only the smile, wide, constant and luminous. It stayed with him as he celebrated on the turf with his wife, as he spoke to the broadcasters, and throughout a marathon 35-minute press conference alongside Gautam Gambhir.
If smiles can lift heavy things, Surya’s lifted the darkest cloud hanging over Indian cricket: the curse of Motera. It was the grin of a man who knew that bad luck is no match for a boy who refuses to go home. It was a smile born of a currency he learned to trade decades ago.

THE ROOTS
At the cricket camp in Mumbai’s Anushakti Nagar, patience was a currency every young cricketer had to learn early.
The nets were always crowded. Seniors usually batted first, the better players stayed longer, and the youngest boys often found themselves waiting on the edges of the ground, pads dangling from their arms and bats resting against their shoulders, hoping their turn would eventually come.
For many of the 10-year-olds, that hope had its limits. When the chances to bat became rare and the afternoon stretched on, they slowly drifted away.
But one boy never seemed ready to leave.
While the others packed up, he stayed behind, chasing balls that rolled towards the boundary, throwing them back to the nets, volunteering for fielding drills even when he had not been asked. If there was work to be done on the ground, he found a way to do it.
Anything that allowed him to remain just a little longer.

One day, his childhood coach Ashok Aswalkar noticed him still hovering around the field despite barely getting a chance to bat. Curious, he asked the boy why he had not gone home like the others.
The answer came without hesitation.
“Sir, I can field an entire day if you want. I can even carry drinks. But, I won’t go home.”
The boy was Suryakumar Yadav.
Years later, when the cricket world began to marvel at the audacity of his batting, the scoops over fine leg, the flicks behind square, the shots that seemed to bend the geometry of the field, Aswalkar often found himself remembering that moment.
Because long before Suryakumar Yadav became one of the most inventive T20 batters of his generation, he was simply the kid who refused to leave the ground.
And in many ways, the story of his career would follow that same pattern. When others moved ahead, when opportunities seemed scarce, when the wait grew longer than expected, he stayed.
Waiting. Working. And believing his turn would come.
On Sunday, the boy who was never tired of waiting finally had his moment under the sun. At 35, Suryakumar Yadav walked out at the Narendra Modi Stadium, leading India in the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 against New Zealand — and left the iconic venue as a World Cup-winning captain.
THE BOY WHO STAYED

The journey began nearly 25 years ago in surroundings far removed from the noise and rush usually associated with Mumbai cricket.
Anushakti Nagar, the residential township of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, is a world of its own. Tree-lined roads, quiet housing blocks and a rhythm of life shaped by discipline and routine. Tucked away from the city’s relentless traffic and restless energy, it feels more like a campus than a suburb.
It was here that Suryakumar Yadav grew up.
His father, Ashok Kumar Yadav, worked as a scientist at BARC, a man trained in precision, logic and method. Cricket, by contrast, offered uncertainty and risk. But when his son began showing an interest in the game, he chose encouragement over caution.
Together with Surya’s mother Swapna, he took their ten-year-old son to a local coaching centre in the colony. It was a modest cricket camp, but it would quietly become the starting point of a remarkable journey.
“It had been two years since I started the camp. His father and mother came to me one day. They wanted him to join my camp. I said ‘yes, leave him here’. He was 10 or 11 years old. He was a beginner. He was a kid,” Aswalkar told IndiaToday.in.
At first, nothing about the boy suggested he would one day become one of the most inventive batters in world cricket.
But hunger often reveals itself slowly.
“Initially, I didn’t figure it out. But, after two years, I realised he is different. They talk about hunger, right? He had that in him even at that age. So, when he came to the camp, he was a kid. There were seniors in the camp with us. He didn’t get a lot of chances to play initially. But, he never went home in disappointment.”
That determination soon became impossible to ignore.
“I remember he said: ‘Sir, I can field an entire day if you want. I can even carry drinks. But, I won’t go home’. He used to stay till the evening. This is a quality that other kids rarely had. As kids, they want to go home if they don’t get to play. He wanted to play. He wanted to stay on the ground.”
In Mumbai’s fiercely competitive cricket structure, that kind of stubborn patience can often make the difference between fading away and breaking through.
Opportunity arrived when the Mumbai Cricket Association organised an Under-14 camp at the same centre.
“Luckily, in two years’ time, we had an MCA Under-14 camp at our center. That became an advantage. I saw his results. He was doing well. So we enrolled him there. He learnt a lot from kids who showed great potential. We had players like Aditya Tare and Dhawal Kulkarni in that camp. There were players who used to play for Mumbai. He benefitted a lot from those players.”
By his late teens, Surya was already climbing the ladder of Mumbai cricket.
He made his List-A debut for Mumbai in February 2010 and his first-class debut later that year in the Ranji Trophy. It did not take long for him to stand out. In the 2011–12 season, he finished as Mumbai’s highest run-scorer, scoring 754 runs from nine matches at an average above 68.
The numbers confirmed what many in Mumbai cricket already believed. Surya was ready for bigger stages.
But bigger stages did not arrive immediately.
THE LONG WAIT
Through much of the 2010s, Suryakumar Yadav quietly became one of the most dependable run-scorers in Indian domestic cricket.
The Indian Premier League soon offered a larger stage. He debuted in 2012, later moved to Kolkata Knight Riders where he was part of their 2014 title-winning squad, before returning to Mumbai Indians.
His performances for Mumbai Indians between 2018 and 2020 turned him into one of the most dependable middle-order batters in the tournament. In 2018 alone he scored 512 runs and became a central figure in the batting order.
Yet the Indian cap remained out of reach.
For a player already deep into his twenties and performing consistently on the biggest domestic stages, the wait began to stretch uncomfortably long. Squad announcements came and went. Younger players debuted. Opportunities appeared to pass him by.
But those who knew him from his early days were not surprised by how he handled the phase.
In many ways, it was still the same boy from the cricket camp in Anushakti Nagar, waiting on the edges of the nets while the seniors batted and refusing to leave even when his turn did not come.
Instead of walking away, he stayed.
He worked on his fitness, expanded his range of shots and refined the attacking style that would later define him in T20 cricket.
Aswalkar remembers that period clearly.
“Many people say that he got his India call-up late by at least 5 years. But, he worked on himself a lot during that phase. The Surya that we see now is a reward of those years of relentless hard work.”
Suryakumar Yadav was 30 when the call-up finally came, in 2021.
To many, it came late.
To those who knew him from the maidans of Mumbai, it was simply the moment the boy who never went home finally got his chance.
REINVENTING THE BATTER

The inventive batter the world sees today was not the player who first walked into Aswalkar’s camp.
“No, no, no,” exclaimed Aswalkar when asked if he had seen the famous ‘Mr 360’ style from Surya’s early days.
“Whichever kid used to come to me, I used to tell them to play with a straight bat. Nobody got to play cross-batted shots. But, when you graduate to a higher level, you have to learn new shots. At the start of his domestic career, he was an orthodox batter. But, once he started playing the IPL, he was with the Mumbai Indians for a couple of years, he then went to Kolkata Knight Riders, and then he returned to Mumbai Indians.”
Yet the origins of that imagination are far humbler.
“Talking about those shots, I can tell you this: we used to play in rain season with rubber balls. In the rainy seasons, these kids didn’t stay home, they came to play cricket. So to get used to the pace of the ball in those rainy days, he played different shots.”
Beneath the flair, the coach says, the fundamentals never disappeared.
“He used to listen to instructions really well. There was also no scope for not listening to my instruction. Don’t forget, he is technically sound at the same time. He continues to play the straight drives and cover drives wonderfully well.”

LEARNING TO LEAD
Those who watched him closely say leadership did not suddenly appear when the captaincy arrived.
By the time Suryakumar Yadav began leading India in his thirties, the instincts had already been forming quietly for years.
At Aswalkar’s camp in Anushakti Nagar, match days could draw as many as forty young cricketers. Managing that chaos was never easy for one coach.
But one teenager soon began making the task easier.
“When you talk about captaincy, he had it in him. When he was 16–17, he started playing for Mumbai. I used to observe him. Since he had the experience of playing at a certain level, I thought I should let him handle a few things here. To play matches, around 35–40 kids used to come to my camp. I was not able to handle everyone. So, I handed over the responsibility of maintaining things to Suryukumar. He played, he captained, he managed the young boys. So, he learned from there. He used to handle it easily.”
It was a small responsibility in a modest neighbourhood camp, but the lessons stayed.
Decades later, standing in the glow of a World Cup victory, that same philosophy of quiet observation remained his North Star.
For Surya, leading India was never about imposing his will, but about protecting the unique identities of those around him.
“You need to understand each character in the team,” he reflected after the final, explaining his approach to man-management. “Everyone is different, they bring a different skill to the table. You need to speak to them, understand their temperaments. We wanted to understand when we press the pedal, when we leave them.”
In a high-pressure environment where many captains demand conformity, Surya’s greatest tactical masterstroke was a simple refusal to change his players. He wanted the same cricketers who dominated domestic and franchise leagues to walk out for India without fear.
“What has given them success… they shouldn’t be running away from it,” he said. “Yes, the jersey color changes, it brings in a lot of emotion, the tricolour, but at the same time, they don’t need to change anything.”
That warmth, Aswalkar says, never changed.
“He had been like this from his junior days, he always had a smile on his face. Initially, he was a bit hot-headed, but when you graduate to the higher levels, you need to be calm, and he learnt it early in his career.”
BACK TO AHMEDABAD

And so the story returned to Ahmedabad. The ground where he made his international debut with a defiant hook for six, and the ground where he had stood in silence after the heartbreak of 2023.
When the final New Zealand wicket fell on Sunday, the secret to his rise was laid bare. It was never talent alone; it was an active, burning patience. Being five years late to the international stage simply meant he arrived with five more years of armour than everyone else.
He stayed when others left for easier paths. He worked when the selectors looked the other way. And on Sunday night, he proved that if you simply refuse to go home, eventually the sky has no choice but to turn blue for you.
But for the man who spent a lifetime waiting, one trophy is not an ending. As the celebrations roared around him, the captain’s smile remained fixed on a new horizon.
“Definitely the next goal is Olympics, Olympic gold,” he said, already looking toward 2028. “And also the T20 World Cup that year. Don’t forget.”
The boy from Anushakti Nagar is still on the field.
And he still isn’t ready to go home.
