The Association of Water Tankers in Mumbai (MWTA) on Thursday (April 10, 2025) suspended an offer in the city indefinitely to protest against the notification of the civic authority to the owners of private wells, which supply tankers water, the official said.
The Association has about 1,800 registered tankers with a capacity of 500-20,000 liters. They supply about 350 billion water to various parts of the city, including the Upscale South Mumbai, said MWTA spokesman Ankur Sharma.
All of them took an “indefinite break” and suspended their operations for an indefinite period, he said.
The authorities made a soil of 200 square squares, proof of rent or ownership of the well, installing a digital water meter, compliance with the BIS standard, accurate measurement of daily income and some other mandatory items, except that Mr. Sharma said from the Central Groundwater Office.
“It is difficult to implement all these rules in the city like Mumbai. If the government does not relax in these conditions, the tanker services will not continue,” he said.
“We turned off our store,” said Mr. Sharma.
He said MWTA wrote letters to the main ministers and other authorities in connection with their problems.
The Minister of the Guardian of the suburban district in Mumbai Ashish Shelar also wrote a letter to the Jal Shakti Council that he did not take measures against private wells, but their owners continue to receive announcements from Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Mr. Sharma said.
