Shyam Jagannathan, Director General Shipping, said here on Friday that the blue economy has emerged as a critical driver of infrastructure development, global competitiveness and sustainable growth under the vision of ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’.
“India’s maritime domain plays a key role in trade and logistics, with more than 90% of the country’s trade volume moving through sea lanes,” he said in his address at COMARSEM 2026 (Cochin Marine Seminar), according to the release.
He said India’s maritime sector has been central to its economic growth story. With more than 1,520 merchant vessels and more than 13 million gross tonnage, India was strengthening its presence in global shipping and maritime services, he said.
He noted that India is steadily emerging as a global leader in the blue economy, supported by a number of initiatives in ports, shipbuilding, logistics, renewable energy and related maritime industries.
He said the government is promoting waste-to-wealth through ship recycling to move India from second to first position globally while promoting green belt development in at least 33 percent of port areas, according to the report.
