A three -day exercise to estimate the elephant population across the Nilgiris began on Friday, May 23, 2025) in Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) and Nilgiris and Gudalur Forest.
In his statement, the Gudalur Forest division said that forest range officers, forest guards, observers and anti-stitkers, among other things, participate in exercises that will include the number of elephants in the region using direct and indirect counting methods.
The forest department will also use drone cameras, observe from the watch and visit the irrigation holes to reach a precise estimate of the elephant population in the region, the statement said.
