The much-awaited elevated expressway in the 12.75 km long Aroor-Thuravur National Highway 66 corridor is nearing completion with 90% of the project work completed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
Sources said the ₹2,200-crore elevated structure would most likely open for motorists from August if all the work goes ahead as planned. When completed, it would be the longest single-pillar-supported elevated highway in the country. NHAI had earlier set February 2026 as the project completion date.
“The lowering of the girders and the installation of decking over them is complete, except for a short section at Aroor where the Extra High Voltage (EHT) power line is supposed to be relocated. The rest of the elevated structure is currently being painted and drainage work is underway on both sides.”
The NHAI has issued a letter to the District Collector of Alappuzha stating that it is willing to transfer to the local bodies the cost of constructing drains to divert water from the NH drains to the waterways on both sides. A joint inspection has been done recently and an estimate is expected to be ready soon,” the sources added.
Meanwhile, the length of the elevated NH would increase by 210 meters south of Thuravur. We learned that a dozen more pillars are being built as part of this.
The NHAI had earlier provided funds to the Public Works Department for upgradation of side roads to cater for the traffic diverted from the 13 km corridor where the elevated structure was being built, to the Kerala Water Authority for relocation of drinking water pipes from the NH and to the Kerala State Electricity Board for relocation of poles and transformers.
