
On Thursday, the Indian Election Commission issued a notice of elections from September 9 to Vice President, who launched a nomination process.
Nominations for vice -presidential elections begin with the announcement of the election commission. The date for filing nominations is 21. August. The nominations will be examined on 22nd August and the last date for the selection of nominations will be 25 August, according to the schedule issued by the Election Commission.
The announcement of the election commission comes after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned as Vice President 21. July and launched a competition for his successor.
Dhankhar, 74, took over the office in August 2022 and his tenure was until 2027.
Pursuant to Article 66 (1) of the Constitution, the vice -president of India is elected by election universities including elected members of Rajya Sabha, nominated members of Rajya Sabha and elected members of Lok Sabha.
How is the vice president elected?
According to Articles 63 to 71 rules of the Constitution and Vice President (elections) of 1974, the Election Commission had to hold formal elections within 60 days of Dhankhar’s resignation and before 19 September 2025.
Voters or election universities include all members of both parliament – chosen and nominated – using a system of proportional representation through a single portable vote. MEPs will submit a single transferable vote with a secret vote.
The election university currently has 788 deputies, 588 in Lok Sabha and 245 in Rajya Sabha.
The decisive National Democratic Alliance led by BJP (NDA) has most voters, including members of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. The NDA and the opposition Indian block are expected to nominate candidates.
