The American team, which was scheduled to visit India from August 25, is likely to postpone the meeting on the next round of the two -sided business agreement on the later date, the official said.
So far, five rounds of interviews have been completed for the bilateral trade agreement (BTA) and the American team is scheduled to visit India for the sixth round of interviews.
The negotiations were scheduled from 25 to 29 August.
“This visit is likely to be completed,” said the clerk who did not want to be named.
Postponing or overparting the meeting assumes significance because the US announced an overwhelming 50% obligation of Indian goods.
The US is pushing a greater access to the market in politically sensitive areas such as agriculture and dairy sectors that India cannot accept because it affects the livelihood of small and marginal farmers.
India said it would not endanger the interests of farmers and cattle breeders.
The US and India announced plans to close the first phase of BTA in the autumn (September-October) of 2025. Both countries focus on more than doubled bilateral trade to $ 500 billion by 2030, from the current $ 19 billion.
While the 25% tariff to Indian goods entering the US came into force from August 7, another 25%, it was announced in India as a punishment for the purchase of oil and military equipment from Russia from 27 August will come into force.
During April-red Earth exports to the US increased by 21.64% to $ 33.53 billion, while imports increased by 12.33% to $ 17.41 billion, according to the Ministry of Trade.
The US was the largest business partner in India in April-red ($ 12.56 billion bilateral trade) 2025-26. Indian exports to America have experienced positive growth since April this year.
