
The American national was arrested on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands for alleged entry into the forbidden tribal reserve area of the Northern Island of Sentinel, the police said on Wednesday.
Mykhailo Viktorovych Polyakov (24), arrested by CID 31 March, allegedly entered the island of North Sentinel without any permission, they said.
He arrived at Port Blair 26.
On March 29, he launched his ship from Kurmy dera Beach around 1 in the morning, carried a coconut and a can of Cola as a “offer for Sentineles”, the police said.
Polyakov reached the northeast coast of North Sentinel Island until 10:00. Using binoculars, he explored the area, but did not see any inhabitants, they said.
He stayed at sea at sea for an hour, blowing a whistle to attract attention, but did not get any answer.
He landed for about five minutes for about five minutes, left off on the coast, gathered sand samples and recorded a video before returning to his ship, the police said.
At 1 pm he started his return journey and arrived at 19:00, he arrived at the beach of Dero, where he was seen by local fishermen, they said.
DGP HS Dhaliwal said PTI, “We get more details about him and his intention to visit the reserved tribal area. We are also trying to find out where he visited elsewhere during his stay in Andaman and Nicobars.
Among the items confiscated from him were an inflatable ship and a trailer or obsm that gathered in the local workshop.
The police said that he carefully planned his way – he conducted research on the seabed conditions, influx and availability from the beach of Kurmy Dera.
During his journey he used GPS navigation, they said.
Polyakov, whose father is of Ukrainian origin, was found in the possession of GoPro camera and his shots showed him landing on the island of North Sentinel, the police said.
Currently, he is in police link to the court’s leadership for further interrogation.
The police said it was not his first visit to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
In October last year he visited Port Blair and tried to explore the island of North Sentinel using an inflatable kayak, but stopped by the hotel staff.
In January this year he also came to the islands and tried to procure the engine for his ship. During this visit, he went to the Baratang Islands and allegedly illegally video schedule of the Jarawa tribe, the police said.
Against him, companies were registered under the 1946 Act, along with the Andaman and Nicobar Islands (protection of indigenous tribes) of the 2012 amendment on the basis of a complaint filed at the Ograbaj Police Station by Pronab in Tirur, Pronab Sircar.
The intimation of his arrest was communicated to the domestic department for further communication with the Ministry of External Affairs and the US embassy, the police said.
Sentineles, who inhabit the island of Northern Sentinel, are marked as a particularly vulnerable tribal group. It belongs to the wider class of Adaman people.
They are hostile to foreigners and killed people who approached or land on the island.
American missionary John Chau was killed in November 2018, when he tried to contact Sentineles, considered the last pre -elitic tribe in the world.
