The 18th edition of the Russian language and literature festival began in the capital.
On this occasion, the 18th Yesenin Prize was presented to CS Suresh for his contribution to the promotion of Russian literature through translation. The award is given by the Honorary Consulate of Russia in Thiruvananthapuram in memory of the Russian poet Sergei Yesenin.
Organized jointly by the Honorary Consulate and the Russkiy Mir Foundation, the festival will include seminars, exhibitions and competitions.
Inaugurating the festival, filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan said that the Russian language and literature have contributed significantly to strengthening cultural ties between Russia and India.
Many renowned writers like Edappalli Karunakara Menon have translated Russian works into Malayalam. Malayalis, he added, are often more familiar with Russian writers than writers from neighboring states, he said.
The ceremony was chaired by the executive director of the Russkiy Mir Foundation, Tatyana Shlychkova. She said the foundation would take the initiative to provide contemporary and classic Russian books to Kerala.
TKA Nair, former Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister of India; writer KV Mohankumar; and Honorary Consul of Russia Ratheesh Nair spoke.
Part of the inauguration was the rendition of Yesenin’s poems in different languages, the program was directed by the poet Rosemary.
