(Bloomberg) – The Thai fighter aircraft on Thursday hit two Cambodian army near their disputed boundaries when the units clashed in several places in the escalation of tensions that have already caused the political crisis in Thailand.
At least one Thai civilian was killed and seven soldiers were injured in shooting and artillery shelling, according to the Thai government. The clashes were reported from six places along the attacked border bordering the Thai northeast region.
Fight – which Thailand said for the first time that the Cambodian troops opened for the first time opening fire near the disputed temple – is still ongoing. Thailand also ordered the evacuation of civilians from at least four border provinces as preventive measures, the Ministry of the Interior said. The Thai Embassy in Phnom Penh advised citizens to leave the country with regard to the escalating situation.
Cambodia questioned the Thai version of events and accused Thai soldiers of the start of the attack. A spokesman for the Ministry of Defense Mala Socheat condemned the Thai military action and said that Thailand uses heavy weapons and deployment of soldiers “to interfere with Cambodian territory is a clear violation” of international laws.
The skirmish came only a few hours after Thailand was expelled by the Cambodian ambassador and remembered his own ambassador from Phnom Penh in response to the second explosion in the mainland, which injured five Thai soldiers on Wednesday. In the reprisal measure, Cambodia reduced diplomatic ties, withdrew her diplomats, and, according to the Cambodian state medium, applied for Thailand.
Thai financial markets were largely not moved by reports of clashes, although it could further reveal the outlook for an economy that has already risen from the threat of 36% of the American tariff of its export. Baht, which had previously increased since February 2022, dropped by 0.1% to 32.19 per dollar. Shares dropped by 0.2%.
The border conflict began at the end of May by exchange of shooting in a disputed area that killed a Cambodian soldier. Since then, both countries have accumulated soldiers along the border and limited ground transitions, which serve as vital trade routes.
He also rattled the dispute in Thai domestic politics. The court suspended Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, while resolving the dispute over the border disputes, he examines accusations of ethical misconduct.
Paetongtarn tried to dispose of the voltage in a telephone call with the former Cambodian leader Hun Dream, but the call was escaped, resisted at home, and the protests demanded its resignation. By July 31, he must submit his defense in the court case.
Although Thailand and Cambodia have a long history of boundaries, relations remained largely stable since the conflict in 2011, which left dozens of dead. After a collision in May, Cambodia in The Hague urged to help solve four controversial land areas. But Thailand said he did not recognize the jurisdiction of the court.
After an incident in the mainland area last week, when a Thai soldier lost his leg, Thailand launched a diplomatic campaign focused on Cambodia. Bangkok informed foreign military attaché and diplomats located in the country and is looking for an action according to the convention against the UN staff, and at the same time involved in bilateral efforts to resolve the dispute.
