The Telangana Medical Council (TGMC) has uncovered widespread irregularities in private eye hospitals in Miryalaguda town of Nalgonda district during surprise inspections conducted on Friday (December 19).
A total of seven centers were inspected and TGMC officials found that none of these eye hospitals had a qualified ophthalmologist working with them. Some of these centers were licensed by the District Registration Office by listing the names of qualified ophthalmologists, but were managed by ophthalmology and optometry technicians.
These technicians were found to be prescribing drugs and diagnostic tests beyond their qualifications and in some cases performing surgical procedures without the presence of a qualified physician. The eye doctors whose names appeared on the cards were found to be practicing in Hyderabad and other cities.
TGMC officials said the inspection team reported serious violations at Sri Venkateswara Eye Hospital and Shalini Eye Hospital. It was found that Dr. M. Bharat Bhushan and Dr. K. Venkateswarlu, who hold only MBBS degrees, falsely claim MS (Ophthalmology) qualification and project themselves as eye specialists. Hospitals were run mostly through technicians, with no qualified ophthalmologist available to treat patients.
Officials also flagged concerns at Komala Medical and General Store, where A. Koteshwar Rao was found to have set up beds at the first aid center without any recognized medical qualification and was found to be administering antibiotics and steroid injections.
The centers inspected by TGMC officials included Sri Venkateswara Eye Hospital, Sri Mahalakshmi Eye Hospital, Annapurna Netralayam, Yashasvi Eye Hospital, Shalini Eye Clinic, Rafa Eye Care Center and Shiva Sai Eye Hospital.
TGMC said criminal cases will be registered against any individuals found to be running these centers without recognized medical qualifications. The board has also issued notices to eye doctors in whose names licenses for these facilities have been obtained, warning that their MBBS licenses will be suspended unless a satisfactory explanation is submitted.
