Telangana Council of Higher Education Chairman V. Balakista Reddy on Saturday said universities must play a key role in promoting environmental awareness among the youth.
It is not only in line with India’s constitutional obligations and judicial directives, but is part of the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, he added. He was addressing a workshop organized at JNTU-H here and the purpose of the discussion was to establish and strengthen Centers for Environmental Conservation or COEs in Telangana universities.
Citing key provisions of the Constitution on environmental protection, Mr. Reddy recalled that it is a clear responsibility of the state and citizens to protect and improve the environment.
Provisions such as Articles 21, 48A and 51A(g) require a solid foundation for universities to establish structured, research-led and impactful COEs, he said.
“The judiciary has consistently emphasized the duty of educational institutions to develop environmental responsibility among students. COEs will help fulfill this national mandate,” he noted.
