
The Telangana Council of Higher Education (TGCHE) on Saturday held a meeting with vice-chancellors of universities in the state to discuss key academic and policy issues related to higher education and urged them to strengthen academic standards and implement reforms in line with the National Education Policy 2020.
TGCHE Chairman V. Balakista Reddy said such a decision was in view of enhancing academic quality and enabling the universities to gain greater advantage in accreditation and ranking systems such as National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), National Board of Accreditation (NBA) and National Credit Framework (NCrF).
The implementation of NEP 2020 is also expected to improve institutional performance in national competitive grants, attract research funding and strengthen the overall academic and research ecosystem of universities, he said.
Accordingly, the agreed credit framework includes a minimum of 120 credits for a 3-year Bachelor’s degree, 160 credits for a 4-year Bachelor’s degree (Honours/Research Honours) and a minimum of 80 credits for postgraduate programmes.
It was also decided to set up a committee of vice-chancellors to prepare comprehensive guidelines on credit structure, lower degrees, credit transfer policy, multi-disciplinary programs and implementation of the multiple entry-multiple exit system.
An official release from TGCHE said that the Vice-Chancellors have unanimously decided to implement the NEP-2020 framework for both undergraduate and postgraduate programs from the academic year 2026-2027.
The meeting also decided that Kakatiya University will conduct the Common Postgraduate Entrance Test (CPGET) for the academic year 2026-2027. Universities will also coordinate with TGCHE to prepare a common academic almanac for undergraduate programs and implement the 99-day Praja Palana – Pragathi Pranalika action plan at the university level.

Yadagiri Rao (Telangana University), Khaja Altaf Hussain (Mahatma Gandhi University), GN Srinivas (Palamuru University), Umesh Kumar (Satavahana University) and Satavahana Women’s University Suryam Surya Dhanan.
