Texas police rush into raging floodwaters to rescue child trapped in car | Follow | Today’s news

Police video captured the dramatic rescue of an infant from a vehicle trapped in floodwaters in South Texas on Saturday after the driver drove into a creek crossing swamped by heavy rain, CBS News reports.

The rescue took place in Beeville, about 100 miles southeast of San Antonio.

First responders rescued the infant from the flooded vehicle

Video shared by the Beeville Police Department showed emergency responders picking up the child in a baby carrier while police and firefighters helped rescue the remaining occupants of the vehicle.

Authorities said there were no injuries.

According to police, the vehicle drove into a flooded low-water crossing after heavy rain quickly flooded the area before barricades could be installed.

The fire chief tried to stop the driver

Police said the local fire chief tried to warn the driver not to pull over, but the driver allegedly did not see him wave, the news site reported.

As soon as the vehicle entered the flooded crossing, the driver lost control as the flowing water began to push the car away.

In the video, rescuers waded into the floodwaters and pulled the child out the passenger side door.

The driver, visibly panicked, handed the child to the responder while the child remained in the carrier. Another respondent quickly covered the child with a coat to protect him from the rain.

It was not immediately clear if there were other passengers in the vehicle.

Police urge caution during heavy rain

Authorities urged residents to slow down and use extra caution near creek crossings and flood-prone roads during periods of heavy rain, CBS News reported.

“No errand, shortcut or destination is worth risking your life or the safety of your family,” the ministry said.
