The Ministry of Roads has invited consultants to prepare a detailed project report for the construction of a four kilometer elevated corridor from Lighthouse to Thiru. You. Ka. Must. This was one of the proposals announced at the assembly meeting to ease the burden on city roads.
The construction and maintenance wing has floated tenders for the corridor to run through Santhome High Road, Greenways Road and Durgabai Deshmukh Road.
“Santhome High Road faces severe traffic jams every day during peak hours as many VIP vehicles pass through it. Marina Loop Road becomes a fresh fish market from 3 pm daily. Though we need help only till Thiru. Vi. Ka. bridge is completed, one of the proposals is to widen the corridor across the river and connect it to Adyar flyover so that vehicles can stay at 700 meters.
The corridor will have two lanes up to 1.8 km and the rest of the four-km stretch will have four lanes, so land acquisition will be required.
“The procurement cost alone could be ₹1,000 crore, while the construction would cost around ₹350-400 crore. The project would take two years to complete after approval from the state government,” the source said.
A similar proposal to build an elevated corridor from Beacon to Thiru. You. Ka. The bridge over Adyar was made in 2022. It was proposed to start near Srinivasapuram and built over Marina Loop Road.
However, the plan was later abandoned, recalled a former road ministry engineer.
Santhome High Road, which has eight schools, Santhome Cathedral, various associations and independent bungalows, apartment complexes and commercial buildings, has not been affected by any widening project so far, the engineer added.
Circular corridor
The city planner suggested reviving the old proposal for an elevated circular corridor along the Adyar Fortification.
“It was proposed about 20 years ago. The corridor would help decongest the city’s roads. It could lead all the way to the airport and also connect the outer ring road,” he added.
