In a shocking incident, ten deer were killed by a pack of stray dogs that entered the Puthur Zoological Park in Thrissur on Tuesday. The deer were housed in a specially designed enclosure in the park.
A team led by Forest Department Senior Veterinary Officer Arun Zacharia has been tasked with conducting a search and investigating the tragedy. An autopsy will confirm the exact cause of death, park officials said.
Meanwhile, Friends of the Zoo, an organization working to develop the park, expressed concern over the incident and called for immediate remedial action.
“The death of several deer in a stray dog attack in the Thrissur Zoological Park is deeply disheartening,” said M. Peethambaran, secretary of the organization.
The group called for an immediate safety audit of all enclosures and adjacent areas of the zoo to assess safety and effectiveness. It also required a review by qualified designers and zoo specialists to evaluate all construction work completed to date and eliminate structural or process deficiencies. Certification from the Central Zoo Authority is also needed, confirming that the park provides adequate safety measures for all existing and future animals, as well as staff and visitors, it said.
