Telangana woman receives ‘triple talaq’ notice by post.
IIn what may be a first-of-its-kind case in Telangana, a Muslim woman from Karimnagar town received a ‘triple talaq’ by registered post from her husband, who works in Saudi Arabia, for allegedly failing to bring an additional dowry of ₹10 lakh. The man also took out an ad in a regional newspaper announcing a divorce.
The woman’s father, advocate Hameed, said sending triple talaq within one year of marriage without following “Sharia” law, even through post, was illegal.
‘She was molested’
Mr. Hameed said his daughter got married to Sajid from Godhamgadda in Karimnagar on January 1, 2016. This woman is an IT professional working in Hyderabad.
Sajid is also an IT professional based in Hara, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The woman’s family said she gave a dowry of ₹5 lakh, 10 tolas of gold, an air conditioner, a motorcycle and furniture at the time of the marriage. However, from the third day of the wedding, the groom’s family allegedly started demanding an additional dowry of ₹10 lakh and subjected the woman to harassment.
The woman’s family approached the court, which ordered the Karimnagar Two city police to investigate the matter. A case was registered against eight persons, including Sajid.
