Telangana to set up anti-drug and safety committees in all educational institutions
The Telangana government will set up anti-drug and security committees in all schools, colleges and other educational institutions as part of a proposed nationwide plan to make campuses drug-free, Director General of Police CV Anand said on Wednesday.
The DGP announced the plan after chairing a review meeting with EAGLE Force officials. He said each institution will also be required to appoint a campus safety coordinator to oversee student safety, drug education programs, counseling and coordination with parents and police.
EAGLE Force representatives presented the proposed framework for the committees, including their responsibilities, implementation and monitoring mechanisms. Mr. Anand directed officials to incorporate suggestions from the education ministry, experts and other concerned departments before finalizing the standard operating procedures and regulatory guidelines.
He said educational institutions should have zero tolerance for drugs and ordered that strict action be taken against institutions found to facilitate or ignore drug-related activities. If necessary, the authorities would be advised to derecognize such institutions, he said.
The proposed measures also include mandatory drug education programs at admission, the deployment of psychologists and counselors, greater involvement of parents, and ongoing awareness campaigns.
The DGP has directed the police, education and health departments to work together on the anti-drug strategy. Another evaluation meeting will be held before the proposal is submitted to the government for approval.
