This Tuesday (December 9, 2025) marks the 16th year since the Center announced in 2009 that the process of carving out a separate Telangana would begin. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy along with his Cabinet colleagues virtually unveiled the Telangana Talli statues in 27 District Collectorates on the occasion.
Last year, the Chief Minister had said that December 9 would be celebrated as ‘Telangana Talli Avatarana Dinotsavam’ every year, which also happens to be Sonia Gandhi’s birthday. The statue at the Telangana State Secretariat was unveiled on this day last year.

The Telangana Talli sculpture was designed after a traditional rural farmer woman. The traditional crops of the state – maize, maize, fox millet – are in the left hand, and the right hand gives assurance of prosperity. The ornaments, including a red bindi (a dot adorning the forehead), clay bangles, an anklet and a nose stud, reflect the culture and traditions of the state. The state government has designed the statue to inspire the aspirations of all sections of the society, according to a press note.
The statue is 12 feet tall and the pedestal is six feet, for a total of 18 feet from the ground. It works in Adilabad, Karimnagar, Warangal, Mulugu, Nalgonda and Narayanpet.

The Bharat Rashtra Samithi had earlier announced that the day would be marked as ‘Deeksha Divas’, highlighting the 11-day hunger strike of party president and former chief minister K. Chandrashekar Rao. He called off the strike after former Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram announced that the process of creating a separate state would be initiated.
The Congress party had planned to celebrate the birthday of party president Sonia Gandhi, who was chairperson of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), at the time of the announcement. Programs are planned at Gandhi Bhavan in Nampally of Hyderabad.
