Telangana Government Pranaam Day Care Centers for Senior Citizens would function from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm on all weekdays except Sundays and public holidays. Basic medical check-ups would take place once a week and medicines would be provided free of charge on prescription. Books and some indoor sports resources would also be available. These are some of the operational guidelines for running the centers.
The centers were inaugurated by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Monday (January 12). The multifunctional day care centers were introduced to promote social interaction among the elderly and contribute to their mental well-being, according to the press release.
The government has approved 39 such centres, one each at the district headquarters. Hyderabad, Medchal Malkajgiri, Rangareddy and Hanamkonda will have two centers each. It is understood that the resources will be completely ready next week.
Director of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Senior Citizens and Transgender Persons B. Shailaja said several senior citizens have no one to talk to as the family is busy with work. “This initiative helps seniors gather and socialize. We try to provide a basic nutritious meal once a day. They can come and go whenever they want,” she said. Other officials have also said that it helps to deal with loneliness experienced in old age.
It was learned that the central government has sanctioned around ₹ 12 lakh per day care center annually and the funds will be released every year. Officials plan to integrate the centers with geriatric wards in government hospitals, coordinate with the police to organize awareness sessions on cybercrime, plan outdoor programs and other activities for the welfare of the elderly. Seniors responded positively to the initiative.
