The strength of the specialized anti-naxal wings – The Greyhounds and the SIB – will be reduced in view of the near-total eradication of Naxalism to utilize their services in the new specialized wings to meet the emerging needs of modern policing, Director General of Police CV Anand said.

Addressing the media in Adilabad on Wednesday, the DGP said, “The Maoist movement has almost died out. Almost all the top leaders of the banned CPI (Maoist), including its central committee members, have either surrendered or been killed in several encounters.”

Sustained efforts of the anti-naxal forces coupled with tough measures by the Center have resulted in the near extinction of Naxalism, he added.

The DGP said, “While Telangana has successfully overcome the challenge of left-wing extremism, the state is now facing new threats in the form of cyber crime, drug abuse and road accidents.

The Telangana Police is moving forward in a new direction of modern policing to fight the drug menace and cybercrime, besides preventing road accidents and ensuring better traffic management, the DGP said.

Referring to cases of drug abuse among students, he said, “It is the collective responsibility of the society to fight the drug menace. All stakeholders including school and college management should work together to curb drug abuse,” he stressed.

The government is soon going to submit a GO to form anti-drug committees in all educational institutions, he noted.

The DGP appreciated the efforts of the police in curbing ganja (hemp) cultivation and vigorous implementation of road safety awareness programs in the combined district of Adilabad.

He emphasized the need to expand technology-led policing initiatives, including the use of drones to curb ganja (cannabis) cultivation.

Earlier in the day, the DGP inaugurated an integrated CCTV monitoring system at the Command-and-Control Center in Adilabad city.

He also inaugurated the Traffic Training Institute, Children’s Park and Traffic Signals in Adilabad.

At a road safety awareness program held as part of the ‘Arrive Alive’ campaign at Tosham village in Gudihathnoor mandal, the DGP handed over helmets, first aid kits and student driving licenses to the tribal youth.

The DGP conducted a crime review meeting at the district police headquarters in Adilabad.
