Health Minister C. Damodar Raja Narasimha on Tuesday held a review meeting with managements of private hospitals to discuss policy measures related to organ transplantation and regulation of clinical facilities in Telangana.
The meeting focused on formulation of policy framework under Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act (THOTA) and implementation of Clinical Establishments Act (CEA) in the state.
The minister has directed officials to simplify procedures and guidelines for organ donation to encourage more people to come forward as donors. An action plan should be prepared to make Telangana a model state in organ transplant treatment and organ donation management, he said.
The need to formulate a comprehensive policy to ensure effective implementation of the Organ Donation Act in the state was also discussed. The minister expressed displeasure over the charging of organ transplants in private hospitals and advised hospital management to introduce price controls so that such treatment remains affordable to the general public.
The minister also directed the hospitals to take measures to ensure that the donated organs are used efficiently and are not wasted. He asked officials to frame new guidelines for patients traveling from other countries for organ transplant in Telangana.
After reviewing the implementation of the Clinical Establishment Act in Telangana, the Minister directed officials to take steps to ensure effective enforcement of the Act in private hospitals in the state.
Medical expenses in private hospitals should not become an undue financial burden on patients, he said, adding that the government has launched an action plan to regulate the tariffs charged for medical treatments.
