The Telangana Director of Medical Education (DME) has issued show-cause notices to 32 faculty members of the state’s medical colleges after finding that they were out of service for more than a year while working in various other institutions. The November 7 notification said prolonged unauthorized absence violates service rules and is tantamount to resignation from government service.
According to the announcement, reports submitted by the directors and superintendents of teaching hospitals revealed that several assistant professors, trainers and faculty heads across departments such as anesthesia, general medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, cardiology, urology and neurosurgery have disengaged from state duties and continued to work elsewhere.
Of the 32 doctors, seven are from Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) Adilabad, two are from GMC Bhadradri Kothagudem, five from GMC Kamareddy, 11 belong to GMC Jagtial and seven from GMC Sangareddy.
“Absence of doctors in high dependency wards has caused inconvenience to the hospital administration and people have been deprived of medical care in the government hospital/college,” the notification said.
Citing Fundamental Rule 18 and the Telangana Leave Rules, 1933, the DME has provisionally decided to terminate the services of the doctors from the date of their unauthorized absence. Before passing the final orders, the individuals were directed to appear in person and submit an explanation within 15 days of receiving the notice. Failure to do so will be deemed an admission that they have no defense to offer, the notice warns.
