Telangana organized its first conference on disaster risk reduction involving animals in Hyderabad on Thursday (November 27, 2025).
Organized by UNICEF and Humane World for Animals India in collaboration with Telangana State Disaster Management Authority, the event brought together policy makers, veterinary experts, humanitarian experts and disaster management officials to explore animal welfare as part of disaster preparedness.
Speakers emphasized that animal protection is vital to protect rural livelihoods and build disaster-resilient communities, especially in a state that faces frequent floods, droughts, heat waves and cyclones. With more than 35 million livestock in Telangana, officials stressed that losing animals during disasters can have serious emotional and economic consequences for families.
Animal Husbandry Minister Vakiti Srihari expressed full support for the initiative at the rally and said that official animal and wildlife protection procedures will be followed. Representatives from Humane World for Animals India emphasized the importance of collaborative planning, noting that disaster preparedness must ensure that “no one is left behind,” including the animals that communities depend on.
Panel discussions and dialogues explored existing disaster management policies for livestock, pets and wildlife. Participants identified gaps, reviewed challenges faced during recent disasters, and proposed strategies for a state-level disaster management model involving animals. Organizers said the conference could pave the way for stronger policy alignment and better preparedness across Telangana.
