Minister for Minority Welfare Mohammed Azharuddin welcomed the Waqf Tribunal’s directions to extend the deadline for the UMEED portal by three months and urged the public to ensure compliance.
Addressing the media, Mr Azharuddin claimed that every effort was being made to ensure that as many waqf properties as possible were registered on the portal, even as he urged the mutawallis to make the most of the extension and ensure the registration of the institutions under their charge.
He said the portal was plagued with technical issues and the mutawallis were initially not equipped with the know-how to go about registering and uploading documents to the portal. He added that while registration is the first step, reviewing data and documents and giving final approval is a time-consuming process.
Documents related to waqf properties were not in one place and had to be collected from various sources, including the State Archives, which was not an easy task.
Telangana government’s Minority Protection Adviser Mohammed Ali Shabbir said that while nearly 75% of waqf institutions have been registered, several in villages such as mosques and ashoorkhanas in villages are yet to be registered. He said this was due to several factors such as legal entanglements and mutawallis or management committees being apprehensive about the process and the government trying to acquire the said properties.
The All India Muslim Personal Law Board, which had initially opposed the UMEED portal and remained apprehensive about it, said the case pending in the Supreme Court had extended the delay.
Telangana Residential Educational Institutions Chairman Mohammed Faheem Qureshi urged the public to use these three months to register as many properties as possible.
Syed Ghulam Afzal Biyabani, chairman of the Telangana State Hajj Committee, who is also a post-holder in the Mutawallis collective, cautions administrators to be careful while identifying and uploading documents. According to him, unintentionally entering incorrect data could lead to the rejection of registration.
To date, 46,480 registrations have been made. Another 16,000 registrations will be completed in the coming weeks.
Minister B Shafiullah, Secretary Minorities Welfare, when asked by the media about the recent food poisoning case at TGMREIS Girls’ School Musheerabad, characterized the incident as “minor” and clarified that the students have been discharged from the hospital. He said that in the recent past there was a 40% increase in per diem fees. No case of food poisoning has been reported in the last six months and the situation has been continuously monitored.
To address this issue, Mr. Azharuddin recommended that the kitchen staff consume food 30 minutes before the students.
