The state government on Sunday decided to divert water from the Godavari to meet the drinking water needs of areas in Hyderabad that depend on the rapidly depleting Singur and Manjira reservoirs. The move is aimed at averting water shortages and preparing for a possible acute water crisis in the coming months amid El Nino conditions.

On the instructions of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) has started work to link existing pipelines to facilitate diversion.

As part of the plan, pipeline interconnection work is underway near Velimela village, near the outer ring road, to connect the 3,000 mm diameter Godavari main circuit with the 1,200 mm diameter Manjira Phase-III and IV gravity mains. The link is expected to allow water from the Godavari to be diverted to the Singur–Manjira supply network as needed.

HMWSSB Executive Director K. Ashok Reddy is overseeing the preparations. Board Technical Director Prabhu and Senior General Manager Rajashekhar on Sunday inspected the works at Velimel and reviewed their progress.

Once the interlinking works are completed, water from the Godavari can be supplied to areas served by the Singur–Manjira system and help reduce the risk of disruption of drinking water supply during periods of scarcity.
