The Telangana Food Safety Department conducted a special enforcement drive targeting cereals and cereal-based products in all 33 districts of the state on February 17 and 18. The exercise was aimed at checking compliance with food safety standards in the production, storage and sale of commonly consumed cereal products.
During the two-day drive, food safety officials inspected 122 establishments in all districts and collected 270 samples for further analysis. The inspection found several violations, including the sale of mislabeled and suspected low-quality cereal products, labeling discrepancies and poor storage and sanitation practices at multiple stores, the department said.
Based on the findings, immediate enforcement measures were initiated. This included confiscating and discarding unsafe food products, along with issuing improvement notices and show-cause notices to facilities in breach of food safety standards.
Along with the enforcement measures, the Telangana Food Safety Department is also targeting to bring unregistered food businesses under the regulatory belt. Food safety enforcement officials conducted special registration camps for unregistered vendors during December and January, resulting in the formal registration of nearly 1,000 previously unregistered vendors.
Officials clarified that registration is only the first step to ensure food safety compliance. They said a structured follow-up mechanism is now being put in place to monitor registered vendors and ensure that food safety standards are followed in practice.
